We use a phased approach to Information Technology (IT) projects. Every project is unique; it involves meeting the business goals and requirements of a specific client, each of whom is different.
The idea of the phased approach is to manage uncertainty by breaking the project into logical stages. This affords greater certainty as to the price and schedule at the completion of each phase. A rigorous project discipline goes a long way to avoiding project failures.
- Each project phase has specific goals and deliverables, and a time frame to avoid it becoming a 'never-ending' project.
- The deliverables at the completion of each phase provide options to move forward, and you can make decisions about which course of action works best for you.
- It gives you control over the project, and avoids spending money in large chunks. If the costs for the next phase look larger than expected, or the benefits are less than anticipated, you can stop the project with no further cost, rather than having a contractual obligation to complete a large project which does not deliver a satisfactory result.
